From Group Stage to Semi-Final. Dux Advisory’s Tournament Journey!

Dux Advisory – Saffery’s Tournament Report
On what turned out to be a blistering hot Saturday, this weekend (Sat 8th Aug), Dux took part in the Saffery’s summer footy tournament. An event in memory of a former Saffery colleague and to raise funds for Active Oxfordshire.
The team arrived at the tournament in high spirits and fully prepared and in full kit, for the competition ahead. The opening three matches were played over 20 minutes, consisting of two 10-minute halves, before the remaining fixtures were reduced to 12 minutes of continuous play due to the heat!
With seven teams competing, the top four would progress to the knockout stages. Dux Advisory approached each fixture with a strong team ethic, adapting to a changing squad throughout the day as players were rotated, injuries were sustained and fatigue became a factor.
Match 1 – Dux Advisory vs Saffery Peterborough
Result: Dux Advisory 5–2 Saffery Peterborough
Dux started the tournament with a challenging opening fixture, going 2–1 down during the first half. Ed provided the team’s goal, finishing from a tight angle on the left-hand side, with his shot finding the bottom corner via the goalkeeper’s legs.
Despite being under pressure, the team remained competitive and went into half-time just one goal behind.
Dux made several changes at the beginning of the second half, introducing Mason, Uzair and Josh. The fresh personnel helped the team establish greater cohesion and improve their link-up play. Dux subsequently took control of the game, scoring three goals within the opening five minutes of the second half through Josh, Ed and Dom.
Dom’s goal was a particular highlight and demonstrated excellent team play. Mason initiated the move by finding Ed on the right, who played the ball inside to Josh. Josh cleverly dummied the ball through to Dom, who finished first time with his left foot into the top-right corner.
Dux continued to apply pressure and added further goals to secure an impressive 5–2 victory and a positive start to the tournament.
Match 2 – Dux Advisory vs IQ Glass
Result: Dux Advisory 1–1 IQ Glass
The second fixture proved considerably more difficult. IQ Glass enjoyed the majority of possession during the first half, while Dux initially struggled with their link-up play and first touches.
With multiple personnel changes taking place throughout the match, the team was still developing relationships and understanding between players. IQ Glass took a 1–0 lead into half-time, leaving Dux needing to respond in the second half.
Ed, Mason and Uzair were introduced for the second period, with the team looking to regain possession and create more opportunities.
A particular mention should go to the IQ Glass goalkeeper, who produced an outstanding performance and made it extremely difficult for Dux to find a way through.
However, Dux continued to press and were eventually rewarded. Ed received the ball on the left-hand side and struck a powerful shot that narrowly evaded the goalkeeper’s reach, bringing the score level.
The match finished 1–1, securing another valuable tournament point.
Match 3 – Dux Advisory vs MHA
Result: Dux Advisory 2–4 MHA
Dux made a strong start against a well-organised MHA side operating with a three-man defence and wing-backs. Their formation created significant challenges, particularly when managing rotations and switches of play.
After falling 1–0 behind, Dux responded strongly. Josh equalised with a composed finish from a standing position just beyond halfway, finding the bottom-right corner.
Alex C then put Dux ahead with an excellent individual effort, beating two defenders down the left-hand side before cutting inside and finishing across goal with his left foot into the bottom-right corner.
Dux went into half-time 2–1 ahead and appeared well placed to secure another victory.
However, the second half presented a different challenge. Dux struggled to press effectively from the front, allowing MHA greater opportunities to exploit spaces and create chances. The opposition’s three-man defensive structure also allowed them to transition between three players in defence and four in attack, creating numerical advantages in key areas.
MHA equalised approximately five minutes into the second half before continuing to apply pressure. Dux found it increasingly difficult to create space and regain control of the match.
Despite a determined effort, MHA scored twice more to secure a 4–2 victory, handing Dux their first defeat of the tournament.
Match 4 – Dux Advisory vs BP Collins
Result: Dux Advisory 1–0 BP Collins
With four points from their opening three matches, Dux recognised the importance of the fourth fixture, with a further victory likely to strengthen their position for qualification to the knockout stages.
The match was closely contested, with both sides enjoying periods of possession in a competitive end-to-end encounter. John also made several important saves when called upon, helping to keep the game level.
With the tournament matches now reduced to 12 minutes of continuous play, Dux knew they needed to make their opportunities count. With approximately four minutes remaining and the score still 0–0, Sean provided encouragement and tactical direction from the sidelines, helping the team maintain its organisation.
The breakthrough soon followed.
Uzair, operating from the right-back position, played the ball into Josh, who received it with his back to goal before laying it off to Ed on the right-hand side. Ed struck the ball first time across goal and into the left side-netting.
The goal sparked a huge reaction from both the players and supporters, reflecting the importance of the moment.
Dux managed the remaining minutes effectively, with Alex D and Jemel making important contributions defensively and on the counter-attack. The team held on to secure a hard-fought 1–0 victory.
Match 5 – Dux Advisory vs Saffery Bournemouth
Result: Dux Advisory 2–1 Saffery Bournemouth
The fifth fixture presented another significant challenge. Mason was forced to withdraw after suffering a recurrence of a groin and ankle injury, further reducing the team’s available options.
The opposition also had to make a change in goal, with the exceptional IQ Glass goalkeeper stepping in for Saffery Bournemouth due to their goalkeeper suffering from cramp.
Saffery Bournemouth started strongly and applied considerable pressure. Their physical approach created difficulties for Dux, including one notable occasion where an opposition player used his strength to progress through three Dux players.
Despite this, Dux remained disciplined and continued to look for opportunities on the counter-attack.
The opening goal came following excellent combination play between Alex C, Ed and Josh. Alex C made a strong run down the left-hand side before finding Ed with a short pass. As Ed was closed down by a defender, he cleverly reversed the ball inside to Josh, who finished into the bottom-left corner to give Dux the lead.
Saffery Bournemouth responded quickly, counter-attacking and finding the equaliser with a powerful shot across goal that left the goalkeeper with little chance.
Dux were dealt another setback when Dom sustained an ankle injury while challenging for the ball and was forced to leave the pitch. The injury was subsequently confirmed to be a significant ankle sprain.
Despite the setbacks, the team continued to compete. Alex D, Uzair and John worked hard to regain possession and prevent the opposition from capitalising.
With five minutes remaining, Dux increased the pressure and began searching for a winning goal. Uzair produced an excellent individual run down the right, weaving past two or three players before unselfishly squaring the ball to Josh as the goalkeeper advanced.
Josh calmly finished into the bottom-right corner to restore Dux’s lead.
The team defended strongly during the closing stages to secure an important 2–1 victory.
Match 6 – Dux Advisory vs Saffery High Wycombe
Result: Dux Advisory 3–3 Saffery High Wycombe
With 10 points and sitting second in the table, Dux were in a strong position to qualify for the knockout stages.
However, the squad was becoming increasingly depleted. Following Dom’s injury in the previous match, Alex C had also picked up a foot injury, leaving Dux with just six available players: John, Alex D, Jemel, Uzair, Ed and Josh.
With tournament organiser and friend Nihal involved with Saffery High Wycombe, the fixture promised to be an exciting contest.
Saffery High Wycombe started quickly and caught Dux off guard, establishing an early 2–0 lead.
Dux responded calmly and began to work their way back into the match. Ed played a through ball from the centre of the pitch to Josh on the right-hand side. Josh took a touch before striking the ball off the left post and into the bottom-left corner.
Dux then continued their comeback. Josh received possession from the backline before playing a short through ball to Ed on the left. Ed finished first time, striking the ball into the top-right corner to bring the scores level.
However, the momentum shifted again almost immediately from the restart, with Saffery High Wycombe regaining the lead following a temporary lapse in marking.
Dux refused to give up and continued to press for an equaliser. With just 30 seconds remaining, the ball rebounded in front of the opposition defence and Ed reacted quickest to fire home.
The final whistle confirmed a dramatic 3–3 draw, with Dux earning another valuable point and maintaining their position near the top of the table.
Semi-Final – Dux Advisory vs Saffery Peterborough
Result: Dux Advisory 1–2 Saffery Peterborough
Dux finished the group stage with 11 points and the second-highest number of goals scored, securing second place in the table and a semi-final against third-placed Saffery Peterborough.
Despite the success of the group stage, the team entered the knockout fixture with a significantly depleted squad due to injuries and fatigue.
For the semi-final, Ed and Uzair formed the defensive partnership, with Jemel and Alex D operating in midfield and Josh leading the attack.
Dux began strongly defensively, successfully limiting the opposition’s main attacking threat, who was one of the tournament’s leading goalscorers. For much of the opening period, Saffery Peterborough struggled to create clear opportunities, with their closest attempts going wide of the goal.
Approximately five minutes into the match, Uzair picked his head up and delivered an incisive pass from just beyond halfway to Josh. Josh finished calmly into the bottom-left corner, catching the goalkeeper by surprise and giving Dux a 1–0 lead.
With the advantage secured, Dux focused on maintaining their defensive shape and protecting the lead.
John produced an outstanding goalkeeping performance, making save after save to keep Dux ahead. His contribution was particularly important during the final eight minutes, during which he made a succession of crucial stops.
With three minutes remaining, Dux won a corner which Ed delivered. The ball was cleared at the near post and fell into a dangerous area, creating a two-versus-two defensive situation. The opposition’s key player managed to evade one defender, leaving Uzair facing a two-versus-one situation. Saffery Peterborough took advantage and found the equaliser.
Shortly afterwards, with both sides looking to play directly into their forwards, Saffery Peterborough created an opportunity down the right-hand side and delivered the ball across goal for a simple finish at the far post.
Dux were unable to find a response before the final whistle, with the match ending 2–1 to Saffery Peterborough.
Conclusion
Although the semi-final defeat brought the tournament to an end, there was plenty for the Dux Advisory team to be proud of.
Finishing second in the group with 11 points, scoring the second-highest number of goals and reaching the semi-final was a fantastic achievement, particularly given the injuries and fatigue that began to take their toll as the day went on.
More importantly, the tournament was a great example of the team’s spirit and willingness to work together. There were plenty of impressive goals, last-minute moments and hard-fought games, but it was the support between the players and those cheering from the sidelines that really stood out.
The team showed plenty of resilience throughout the day, especially in coming back from difficult positions against Saffery Bournemouth and Saffery High Wycombe. Even with a depleted squad towards the end, everyone continued to give their best and support each other.
A special mention goes to Uzair for organising the team’s entry and to John for an excellent performance in goal, particularly in the semi-final where he pulled off a string of important saves to keep Dux in the game.
While we didn’t quite make it to the final, reaching the semi-finals was a great result and, most importantly, everyone had a fantastic day. There was plenty of good football, plenty of laughs and, perhaps most importantly, some excellent team spirit.
